Asymmetric off-fault damage generated by bilateral ruptures along a bimaterial interface

چکیده

[1] We perform numerical simulations of spontaneous dynamic rupture governed by a slip-weakening law along a bimaterial interface (fault) with off-fault damage in the form of Coulomb plastic yielding. Off-fault plastic yielding stabilizes the wrinkle-like slip pulse in terms of a decreasing rate of slip velocity growth. With a variety of model parameters, ruptures on the fault are bilateral, while off-fault plastic strain distribution between the two rupture directions is highly asymmetric. Citation: Duan, B. Cracks, pulses and macroscopic asymmetry of dynamic rupture on a bimaterial interface with velocity-weakening friction

S U M M A R Y We study in-plane ruptures on a bimaterial fault governed by a velocity-weakening friction with a regularized normal stress response. Numerical simulations and analytical estimates provide characterization of the ranges of velocity-weakening scales, nucleation lengths and background stresses for which ruptures behave as cracks or pulses, decaying or sustained, bilateral or unilate...

The effect of asymmetric damage on dynamic shear rupture propagation II: With mismatch in bulk elasticity

We investigate asymmetric rupture propagation on an interface that combines a bulk elastic mismatch with a contrast in off-fault damage. Mode II ruptures propagating on the interface between thermally shocked (damaged) Homalite and polycarbonate plates were studied using high-speed photographs of the photoelastic fringes. The anelastic asymmetry introduced by damage is defined by ‘T’ and ‘C’ di...

Aftershock asymmetry on a bimaterial interface

[1] To better understand the asymmetric distribution of microearthquake aftershocks along the central San Andreas fault, we study dynamic models of slip-weakening ruptures on an interface separating differing elastic half-spaces. Subshear ruptures grow as slightly asymmetric bilateral cracks, with larger propagation velocities, slip velocities, and normal stress changes at the rupture front mov...

Properties of inelastic yielding zones generated by in - plane dynamic ruptures — II . Detailed parameter - space study

We perform a detailed parameter-space study on properties of yielding zones generated by 2-D in-plane dynamic ruptures on a planar fault with different friction laws and parameters, different initial stress conditions, different rock cohesion values, and different contrasts of elasticity and mass density across the fault. The focus is on cases corresponding to large strike-slip faults having hi...

Dynamic rupture on a material interface with spontaneous generation of plastic strain in the bulk

We discuss 2D simulations of in-plane ruptures on a fault between different solids in a model that includes dynamic generation of plastic strain off the fault. The fault is governed by a regularized friction with a gradual response to abrupt changes of normal stress, while plastic strain in the bulk is governed by a Coulomb yielding criterion. The occurrence of off-fault damage stabilizes the s...
